:: RETROSCOPE :: Retroscope is a regular series th :: RETROSCOPE :: Retroscope is a regular series that mines the past for literary travel writing gems. This installment finds us with nineteenth-century British writer Frances “Fanny” Trollope as she travels with her children to America, from the mouth of the Mississippi to the falls of Ohio. Intro by contributing editor @alanbernheimer:⁣
⁣
“As we advanced, however, we were cheered, notwithstanding the season, by the bright tints of southern vegetation. The banks continue invariably flat, but a succession of planless villas, sometimes merely a residence, and sometimes surrounded by their sugar grounds and negro huts, varied the scene. At no one point was there an inch of what painters call a second distance; and for the length of one hundred and twenty miles, from the Balize to New Orleans, and one hundred miles above the town, the land is defended from the encroachments of the river by a high embankment which is called the Levee; without which the dwellings would speedily disappear, as the river is evidently higher than the banks would be without it. When we arrived, there had been constant rains, and of long continuance, and this appearance was, therefore, unusually striking, giving to ‘this great natural feature’ the most unnatural appearance imaginable; and making evident, not only that man had been busy there, but that even the mightiest works of nature might be made to bear his impress; it recalled, literally, Swift’s mock heroic, ‘Nature must give way to art.’ Yet, she was looking so mighty, and so unsubdued all the time, that I could not help fancying she would some day take the matter into her own hands again, and if so, farewell to New Orleans.”⁣

“I believe in magic even though I don’t. I don’t believe that a wave of the hand and a magical word will change anything, that a charm held a certain way has any power outside of someone’s mind. Despite that, I believe that the Metallica song ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ catches lobsters, and that Park Sae-Jin is a magical name.⁣
⁣
“As a kid it was easier to believe in magic and superstition, like when I found a bunch of keys strung on a piece of wire. Bad things started to happen. I cut my finger. The Houston Oilers lost a football game. I was convinced it was a jinx, so I hid them in some bushes. When I found them a year later, by accident, I skinned my knee. Then I went from thinking it was bad luck to knowing, somewhere deep in my being, that it was. I threw them in the river in a mud flat. They are probably still there.⁣
⁣
“On the other hand, I have bought little lucky souvenirs while traveling, like a golden Buddha in Hong Kong, a cross from where they have the Holy Grail in Valencia, a magic hand from Brazil, a glass blue eye from Lebanon, a magic bullet from Morocco and a dream catcher from Wounded Knee, South Dakota. I have a bunch of them; I don’t know if I really believe that they are lucky, but they can’t hurt…”⁣
