Richard LeBlond is a retired biologist living in North Carolina. His essays and photographs have appeared in many U.S. and international journals. He is most inspired by natural landscapes, especially the portals—places that beckon. He is also attracted to regions where human culture is in harmony with its natural setting, where people live with the land instead of just on it. Newfoundland and the American West have been very inspirational for both of these themes. (All photos © Richard LeBlond)
