Blanketed in white after an unprecedented summer snow storm, the Tarfala Research Station is a field station of Stockholm University established in 1902. It is located in the Tarfala Valley nestled between Sweden's Kebnekaise mountains at an altitude of 1,135 meters. Four glaciers are located in the Tarfala valley, including Storglaciären (The Grand Glacier), which is a polythermal glacier (both cold and warm temperature bottoms) that has been measured since 1947. It has the longest continual record of annual mass balance measurements, providing valuable insight into the rate of climate change for 72 years, making it the most well studied glacier valley in the world.
